I’ve learned how to be careful.

Careful what I say.

How loudly I laugh.

Careful not to give anyone a reason to be angry.

Then I met Zayne.

Loud. Tattooed. Unfiltered. He asks questions he probably shouldn’t, and actually listens to the answers.

He doesn’t know about the bruises beneath my clothes. Or the rules I’m trained to live by.

And maybe that’s why, for one hour every Friday, I forget to be careful.

He makes me laugh. Makes me wonder if the world could be less tainted than the one I’ve come to know.

To Zayne, they're probably just conversations.

To me, they’re a spark.

And sometimes, the smallest sparks leave the deepest marks.
